The 8th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia

Announcing the 8th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia

The International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia has established itself as the foremost global forum for advancing research, clinical practice, and patient advocacy in the fields of hyperacusis and misophonia. Since its inception, the conference has successfully brought together a diverse multidisciplinary community, including oto-rhino-laryngologists, audiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, hearing aid dispensers, social workers, teachers, neuroscientists, researchers, and other allied professionals involved in patient care and research.

We are delighted to announce that the 8th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia (ICHM8) will take place in Hanover, Germany, from 14–16 October 2026.

Why This Conference Matters

Over three days, ICHM8 will offer attendees:

  • Keynote addresses from a distinguished panel of world-renowned experts.
  • An interdisciplinary programme featuring audiology, ENT, mental health, neuroscience, psychoacoustics, psychometry, epidemiology, and neurology.
  • Insights from leaders in medical, surgical, rehabilitative, and mental health research, as well as voices of those with lived experience of hyperacusis and misophonia and their families.
  • A specialist exhibition showcasing innovations in hearing care, therapy tools, and support services.

Previous conferences have demonstrated the crucial impact of these events, gathering participants from around the world, including the UK, Canada, Finland, South Africa, Ireland, USA, India, Norway, Belgium, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, Germany, Portugal, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Spain, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Colombia, Lebanon, Japan, China, Pakistan, and many more.

Highlights from past conferences include:

  • Exploring research on the diagnosis, assessment, mechanisms, and treatment of hyperacusis and misophonia—highlighting both their commonalities and distinctions.
  • Practical outcomes such as the development of clinical guidelines, validated assessment tools, and targeted cognitive behavioural therapy approaches.
  • Vital new understandings of the neurological and emotional underpinnings of hyperacusis and misophonia.

Topics of Interest

ICHM8 is dedicated to advancing our understanding and clinical management of hyperacusis and misophonia. We welcome contributions addressing the following key themes:

  • Mechanisms and Causes: Exploration of the physiological, neurochemical, and neuroanatomical underpinnings of hyperacusis and misophonia, including experimental models, metabolic and structural brain changes, sensory gating deficits, and alterations in auditory-limbic networks.
  • Diagnosis and Assessment: Innovations in the assessment of hyperacusis and misophonia through audiological, behavioural, and neuroimaging methods, validated questionnaires, and objective biomarkers. Special emphasis on differential diagnosis across overlapping conditions.
  • Treatment and Clinical Management: Evidence-based psychological interventions, counselling protocols for transitional management, novel mHealth approaches, sound therapy integration, surgical innovations, and emerging neuromodulation techniques tailored for hyperacusis and misophonia.
  • Relationships Between Conditions: Comparative studies examining the relationships and distinctions between hyperacusis, misophonia, tinnitus, noise sensitivity, auditory processing disorders, autism spectrum conditions, and tic disorders.
  • Social, Psychological, and Educational Aspects: Understanding the disability impact, family dynamics, emotion regulation challenges, educational functioning, and coping strategies for children, adolescents, and adults affected by hyperacusis and misophonia.
  • Innovative Approaches and Future Directions: Novel frameworks for understanding sensory hypersensitivity, identification of symptom-based subgroups, citizen science initiatives, creative arts approaches, and discovery of therapeutic biomarkers and targets.

We encourage submissions from a wide range of disciplines including audiology, psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, otolaryngology, education, and the arts. ICHM8 fosters interdisciplinary dialogue aimed at improving outcomes for individuals affected by hyperacusis and misophonia worldwide.

Introduction to Scientific Tracks at ICHM8

Scientific tracks are thematic frameworks used to structure the content of a conference. Each track brings together oral presentations, posters, symposia, and discussions around a focused topic or domain of research. This approach ensures coherence, enhances programme navigation, and creates a clearer thematic experience for both attendees and presenters.

At the 8th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia (ICHM8), our track-based structure reflects the increasing complexity and interdisciplinarity of the field. By establishing distinct yet interconnected tracks, we aim to:

  • Showcase the full spectrum of current research across audiology, neuroscience, psychology, medicine, and the arts

  • Foster meaningful exchange between clinicians, researchers, patients, and allied professionals

  • Ensure equal visibility for emerging areas — including cultural, developmental, and philosophical perspectives — alongside established clinical and neuroscientific themes

  • Encourage focused submissions and symposia that build momentum in key areas of innovation

This structure positions ICHM8 as a landmark event — one that balances scientific rigour with clinical relevance and supports the development of a truly integrative understanding of sound intolerance conditions.
