Work absence and ability in people with tinnitus and hyperacusis

“Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Work: What the Research Tells Us”
🗓 Monday 1st December 2025
🕖 7:00–8:00 PM (UK Time)
🎙 Presented by Kaia Ringstad Andreassen and Guri Engernes Nielsen
🎤 Hosted by our very own Joanna Barker

We’re delighted to invite you to our next Patient Education Programme event, where we’ll explore a topic that touches the lives of many adults living with tinnitus and sound sensitivity: how these conditions affect our ability to work and stay in employment.

Drawing from recent research in Norway, this presentation will shed light on the real-world impact of tinnitus and hyperacusis on work ability and absenteeism. The findings are striking: over 60% of individuals reported reduced ability to work due to their symptoms, with hyperacusis playing a particularly significant role—especially among teachers and early-years professionals.

You’ll gain insights into:

  • How tinnitus and hyperacusis are experienced in different workplace sound environments

  • Why hyperacusis may be a hidden barrier to employment

  • The types of jobs most affected

  • What can be done to better support people at work

Whether you’re managing these conditions yourself, supporting someone who is, or simply want to understand more, this session promises to be eye-opening, compassionate, and practical.
