As we approach the end of another year and holidays season, we would like to thank you for taking part in our therapy programmes, enrolling in our educational courses, reading our weekly newsletter, following us on social media and watching our patient education programme series. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year!
In 2023, Hashir International was recognised as an independent research institute (Read here for more information). Our main priority is delivering high-quality care for our patients. Our treatments are delivered by a multidisciplinary team of specialists and recent research on our premier therapy package has shown very good results in helping patients to manage the symptoms of misophonia, tinnitus and hyperacusis and significantly improve their quality of life.
Recently parent of a patient with misophonia wrote to us about the progress of their daughter during the therapy. They said: “I would like to thank you and the team at Hashir International Institute for the expertise, kindness and support you have not only shown Anna, but with us as well! When Anna first started having symptoms, it was very distressing for all of us. As parents we felt completely ill-equipped to deal with her emotions and had no understanding. The expertise and knowledge from your clinic have given us a greater understanding of Misophonia.” Read the full story here.
In 2024, our researchers have contributed to several conferences around the world comprising the 7th International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia (Warsaw, Poland), 36th World Congress of Audiology (Paris, France), Tinnitus UK online conference, and The British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists Roadshow (Belfast, Northern Ireland). We organised the first Patients and Doctors Webinar on Misophonia, Tinnitus and Hyperacusis in February 2024 during the national tinnitus awareness week, the Tinnitus Masterclass for healthcare professionals on 25-26 April 2024 in London, the Student Research Webinar in May 2024 and the first International Conference on Pharmacology & Gene Therapy for Tinnitus on 28th June 2024.
As a part of our public projects, we organised the Sound Off art competition in 2024 in collaboration with the World Hearing Centre and the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing and the Institute of Sensory Organs sponsored by MED-EL. The aim of the Sound Off was to raise awareness about misophonia, tinnitus and hyperacusis. Artists from different countries took part in the competition by submitting their pieces of artwork that demonstrated the experience of living with misophonia, hyperacusis or tinnitus. In 2024, our researchers have published several research studies in peer-reviewed medical journals. We have published the psychometric analyses of the Hyperacusis Impact Questionnaire (HIQ), the Misophonia Impact Questionnaire (MIQ), the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ), and the 4C Tinnitus Management Questionnaire (4C) in the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology, International Journal of Audiology, and PLOS one. We also published studies on the Prevalence of Ear-Related Problems in Individuals Recovered From COVID-19 , A Preliminary Analysis of the Clinical Effectiveness of Audiologist-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Delivered via Video Calls for Rehabilitation of Misophonia, Hyperacusis, and Tinnitus, Preliminary Study on Speech in Noise Training in Children with Sensory Processing Disorder and Hyperacusis , and a comparison of interaural asymmetry, audiogram slope, and psychometric measures of tinnitus, hyperacusis, anxiety and depression for patients with unilateral and bilateral tinnitus.
Looking ahead we have planned several events for 2025. Our main event is the Hybrid Tinnitus Masterclass which is a training course for qualified healthcare professionals. It starts with 3 days face-to-face lectures on 10-12 March 2025 at Birkbeck college, University of London, followed by 12-month online training course and clinical supervision.
We are very excited about our 2nd International Conference on Pharmacology & Gene Therapy for Tinnitus which is planned for October 2025. This conference is suitable for members of public as well as healthcare professionals. The aim is to bring together researchers and clinicians from the fields of hearing science, pharmacology, and gene therapy to share their perspectives and scientific discoveries that can guide future development of tinnitus treatments.
